It’s a bird, it’s a plane… no, it’s a #supermoon! The moon, or supermoon, is seen rising behind the Soyuz rocket at the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad in Kazakhstan today. NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy of Roscosmos, and ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 3:20 p.m. EST Thursday. All three will spend approximately six months on the orbital complex. A supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest (perigee) to Earth. The moon was the closest to the Earth since 1948 and won’t be again until 2034. Earth photobombs our sun watching spacecraft! Our Solar Dynamics Observatory experienced a partial solar eclipse in space when it caught the moon passing in front of the sun. The lunar transit lasted one hour, between 3:56 p.m. and 4:56 p.m. EDT, with the moon covering about 59 percent of the sun at the peak of its journey across the face of the sun. The moon’s shadow obstructs SDO’s otherwise constant view of the sun, and the shadow’s edge is sharp and distinct, since the moon has no atmosphere which would distort sunlight. From SDO’s point of view, the sun appears to be shaking slightly. It’s from slight adjustments in SDO’s guidance system, which normally relies upon viewing the entire sun to center the images between exposures. SDO captured these images in extreme ultraviolet light, a type of light invisible to human eyes. The imagery here is colorized in red. Dead Star’s Ghostly Glow: Astronomers discovered a real “tell-tale heart” in space, 6,500 light-years from Earth. The “heart” is the crushed core of a long-dead star, called a neutron star, which exploded as a supernova and is now still beating with rhythmic precision. Evidence of its heartbeat are rapid-fire, lighthouse-like pulses of energy from the fast-spinning neutron star. The stellar relic is embedded in the center of the Crab Nebula, the expanding, tattered remains of the doomed star. Credits: NASA and ESA, Acknowledgment: M. This artist’s impression shows a view of the surface of the planet Proxima b orbiting the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the solar system. The double star Alpha Centauri AB also appears in the image. Proxima b is a little more massive than the Earth and orbits in the habitable zone around Proxima Centauri, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface. In a study to be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, an international team led by researchers at the Marseille Astrophysics Laboratory (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Université) has determined the planet’s dimensions and properties of its surface, which actually favor its habitability. The team says Proxima b could be an “ocean planet,” with an ocean covering its entire surface, the water perhaps similar to that of subsurface oceans detected inside icy moons around Jupiter and Saturn. The researchers also show that Proxima b’s composition might resemble Mercury’s, with a metal core making up two-thirds of the mass of the planet. These results provide the basis for future studies to determine the habitability of Proxima b. Credits: ESO/M. It’s launch day! The Orbital ATK Antares rocket, with the Cygnus spacecraft onboard, is seen here during sunrise on launch Pad-OA at our Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Liftoff is scheduled at 8:03 p.m. EDT. This cargo resupply mission will deliver over 5,100 pounds of science, research and supplies to the orbiting laboratory (@ISS) and its crew. Populations all along the east coast will have the chance to catch a glimpse of the Antares rocket as it blasts Cygnus on the way to orbit. Viewing maps are available on the NASA’s website. A cluster of young stars – about one to two million years old – located about 20,000 light years from Earth. Data in visible light from the Hubble Space Telescope (green and blue) reveal thick clouds where the stars are forming. High-energy radiation in the form of X-rays, however, can penetrate this cosmic haze, and are detected by Chandra (purple). It’s small, it’s hot, and it’s shrinking. New NASA-funded research suggests that Mercury is contracting even today, joining Earth as a tectonically active planet. Images obtained by NASA’s MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft reveal previously undetected small fault scarps— cliff-like landforms that resemble stair steps. These scarps are small enough that scientists believe they must be geologically young, which means Mercury is still contracting and that Earth is not the only tectonically active planet in our solar system, as previously thought. Saturn, with its alluring rings and numerous moons, has long fascinated stargazers and scientists. Voyager 2 made its closest approach to Saturn 35 years ago today — on Aug. 25, 1981. In this image, Saturn’s rings are bright and its northern hemisphere defined by bright features as Voyager 2 approaches the planet. Three images, taken through ultraviolet, violet and green filters were combined to make this photograph.
