My last visit to the Red Sea gave me this sad situation that I knew happened but I had never witnessed myself. At the end of a dive on a reef called Big Gota, we came across 2 hawksbill turtles, a male and female feeding on jellyfish. I got close to the female and took a few photos of her eating. Then I realised she had a plastic bag in her mouth and in fact wasn’t able to eat, she was just nudging the jellyfish clearly in some distress. I had to try and help so I put away my camera and tried to pull the bag from its mouth. The plastic bag was not only in her mouth but also down her throat. I had to hold onto its shell and try to wrestle from her. The turtle was surprisingly calm and let me manhandle her a little and once she opened her mouth the bag came out. There was about 8 inches down her throat and wouldn’t have been able to eat. Almost as soon as I pulled the bag out she tried to eat yet another bag that floated by, I quickly pulled that bag away and she went on to eat a few of the many jellyfish around us, she was clearly very hungry. I took a few photos and as our dive time was up we decided to ascend. Both turtles followed us up and seemed to play with us on the surface, with them at times climbing all over our cameras as we tried to photograph them. I’m not sure they were ‘saying’ thank you but it was a great interaction to sad introduction to these two incredible marine reptiles. I’m sure these turtles will just go on to eat the next plastic bag that floats by but I hope I helped a little. Strangely we encountered more turtles on this trip that I had ever seen before but they will soon die out unless we do something, NOW! I want our children to see with their own eyes what I’ve come to love on the oceans. I often talk about plastic waste in the ocean but have never seen it’s effect so close up. For the love of what ever you hold dear act on this, don’t leave it for someone else. Please think about this the next time someone offers you a plastic bag or disposable item, do you really need it, maybe you could just pop that item in your pocket and keep a reusable bag with you. #redsea #turtle #plastic #plasticpollution #plasticoceans #pollution

Meet Edison – Crabs with beach trash homes by Shawn Miller Found naturally using a incandescent light bulb screw end as a protective home. The hermit crab is one of the few animals that can successfully adapt with our waste. Our trash is becoming a serious problem on our shorelines. Most of the trash washed ashore are single use items, such as plastic bags, forks, spoons, twist top caps, plastic bottles, razors, flip flops, cigarette butts, tooth brushes and rope. Its time to act! What can you do to make a difference? #1frame4nature #canon #canonphotography #macro #hermitcrab #maketheswitch4nature #crabswithbeachtrashhomes ##yeahiknowshawnmiller

Photo by @jtkerby | Plastic finds its way to every corner of the planet. This juvenile gelada monkey, in a centuries-old protected area in Ethiopia, interacts with a plastic bag discarded along the roadside. The decision to use a plastic bag is made in a moment, but its legacy will last for generations. This is not an issue unique to Ethiopia, or any single country, for that matter. It is a global problem, one exacerbated by increased consumption and poor planning. Solutions begin with decisions to avoid needless uses and consider alternatives–and to expect more from legislators in a position to strike at the core of this problem. We do not need to live in a world with scenes like this one. #IChoosePlanet #YouCanToo #PlasticPledge Shot on assignment for @NatGeo with additional grant support from @InsideNatGeo. #Wildlife #Roads #Grasslands

It’s a photo that I wish didn’t exist but now that it does I want everyone to see it. What started as an opportunity to photograph a cute little sea horse turned into one of frustration and sadness as the incoming tide brought with it countless pieces of trash and sewage. This sea horse drifts long with the trash day in and day out as it rides the currents that flow along the Indonesian archipelago. This photo serves as an allegory for the current and future state of our oceans. What sort of future are we creating? How can your actions shape our planet?
.
thanks to @eyosexpeditions for getting me there and to @nhm_wpy and @sea_legacy for getting this photo in front of as many eyes as possible. Go to @sea_legacy to see how you can make a difference. . #plastic #seahorse #wpy53 #wildlifephotography #conservation @nhm_wpy @noaadebris #switchthestick

We were devastated when we arrived to Pasut Beach and found this sea of garbage that kept growing as it crashed on the shore. ~ Remember. You are NOT just one in 7 billions and each of your actions matters. Take conscious decisions everyday & remember why you are doing it: for our planet ? for all the living beings ? & for the future generations ? ~ When traveling it can be so difficult not to use plastic, but we always bring our refillable water bottle, as well as reusable bags for markets. We also pick up plastic whenever we go to the beach ? ~ Any other tips on beeing environmentally conscious while traveling? · · · #pasutbeach #savetheplanet #plasticpollution #followmeto #passportlife #travelingtheworld #passionpassport #traveldiaries #travelandexplore #coupletravel #travelbucketlist #fulltimetravel #travelislife #starttheadventure #travelinspo #wheretonext #digitalnomad #explorebali #visitbali #thebalibible
