Sarajevo Roses. These are the concrete scars caused by shells falling on the city. They’ve been painted red with resin where the explosion resulted in one or more deaths – the color of blood and of roses. They remind us of the pain and horrors of war, of all the lives lost. To me, they show the resilience of the Bosnian people and their ability to find beauty even in the darkest of times. We passed this one on our way home from the history museum. This was one of the biggest scars I had seen and it really struck me. It’s odd  to watch as people walk past these things, literally moving on. Some stop and reflect, others glance, and some just continue appearing not to notice. The reactions are all diverse, and I will not begin to judge where each one comes from, but it is interesting to observe. There was a lot of subtle art painted in dull colors along the street around this Sarajevo Rose. One that was striking was a modern city skyline with children watching over it with scared expressions on their faces. The way the art is so large yet blends into the sidewalk was so interesting to me. The Sarajevo Roses around the city serve as constant reminders to the reach and distance of war on the city, as well as the beauty of its people. #day115

#sarajevo #saraybosna #bosnia #bosna #bosniaherzegovina #mostar #travnik #seyahat #travel #umuttuneli #tunel #sarajevowartunnel #sarajevowar #tunelspasa #tunneloflife #tunnelofhope #butmir

From #1992 to #1996 #Sarajevo’s population of just over 500,000 people suffered #shelling, tank fire and #sniper attacks by 18,000 Serbian soldiers when they tried to break-away from #Yugoslavia. Over 11,000 people lost their lives and large parts of the #city were destroyed.
